Heating & hot water

🔥 Heating

The thermostat is a 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat, in the kitchen — so it heats (or doesn't) based on the temperature in that room specifically, not the whole house. Change the temperature by turning the outer body of the thermostat.

See Google’s own instructions for the full picture, but please contact us before changing anything beyond the day-to-day temperature.

If the thermostat says it’s heating but the radiators aren’t warming up, there may be a boiler issue such as a pressure drop — see Troubleshooting below.

🚿 Hot water

The hot water tank is in the boiler cupboard and heated on a schedule — please don’t change this, the water should be hot enough at all times.

How hot it actually gets is set by the boiler’s “flow temperature” — if you think it’s running too hot or too cold, that’s the setting to check. See Boiler below.

🔧 Boiler

It’s a Vaillant boiler, in the cupboard at the top of the stairs from the entrance hall. The cupboard key is on the back of the kitchen door to the back garden.

To check the flow temperature:

  1. Press the top-right button twice, until the display says "target flow temp".
  2. Use +/− to adjust — 60°C is a good setting.
  3. Press "back" to exit.

If the boiler is showing a fault, see Troubleshooting below.

❓ Troubleshooting

No heating or hot water, with an F.75 fault showing behind the front flap? That usually means the system has lost pressure and needs topping up:

  1. Find the two black taps below the boiler (see photo).
  2. Turn both 90° from vertical to horizontal to open them.
  3. Listen for water entering the system.
  4. Keep the taps open until the pressure gauge reads halfway between the two dashed lines.
  5. The boiler should restart on its own, normally within 30 seconds.
  6. Important: turn both taps back to vertical (closed) once done.
